TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Japan Airlines unveiled a special aircraft adorned with Doraemon graphics in Tokyo on Wednesday for use in flights between Japan and China.
It will be the first time for an aircraft featuring the popular Japanese manga character, which is also recognized by many Chinese people, to fly an international route.
JAL hopes that the aircraft will help the airline attract more China customers amid fierce competition from low-cost carriers.
Speaking at a presentation event in Ota Ward, JAL President Yoshiharu
Ueki voiced hopes the Doraemon jet will be a chance for Chinese people to get to know the airline.
The Boeing 767-300 is decorated with images of Doraemon flying with a “takecopter” gadget on the front part of the aircraft body.
Paper cups featuring Doraemon will be used in the cabin and Doraemon postcards will be distributed on flights.
The special plane will be in service between Thursday and the end of March next year mainly on the route connecting Narita International Airport in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, and Shanghai. Its first flight departed Thursday morning between Tokyo International Airport at Haneda and Shanghai.
