Sales Start For Final Heisei New Year’s Postcards

TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Ahead of the last New Year during the current Heisei era, Japan Post Co. launched sales of New Year’s lottery postcards for 2019 across the country on Thursday.

The Heisei era, which started in 1989, is set to end on April 30 next year with the Emperor’s abdication.

“There are many different kinds of ‘nengajo’ [New Year’s greeting cards],” Sho Sakurai, a member of pop group Arashi, said at a sales launch event at the JP Tower in the Marunouchi district in central Tokyo.

“I want people to enjoy the last nengajo in the Heisei era,” Sakurai said.
Nozomi Okuhara, a badminton player who also joined the event, said the next year will be an important year to achieve her goals. She said she will send nengajo “to show my continuing gratitude.”

The New Year’s postcard is priced at ¥62, the same as regular postcards, while New Year’s postcards with an add-on donation, including for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, cost ¥67.

The initial number of New Year’s greeting cards issued for 2019 stood at 2,400,212,000, down 7.2 percent from the previous year’s figure, which was the lowest since comparable data became available in 2004.

Hoping to prevent a further decline, the mail delivery arm of Japan Post Holdings Co. this year offers postcards that feature the mascots of the Olympics and Paralympics with the donation of ¥5. The company added pairs of tickets for Olympic competitions to the list of lottery gifts.

The lottery will take place on Jan. 20 as usual. Another one will be held on April 20 to mark the start of the new era.
