▼ Bunch of Grapes Fetches Record ¥1.11 Million

KANAZAWA (Jiji Press) — A bunch of premium grapes developed in Ishikawa Prefecture fetched a record high of ¥1.11 million in the first auction of this season on Friday.
The price for the grapes, Ruby Roman, eclipsed the previous high of ¥1.10 million marked last year.
“We’re happy as we wanted to buy them [the grapes] in their 10th year in the market,” said Takao Teshima, the winning bidder and general manager of Kagaya, an exclusive “onsen” hot springs inn based in Nanao, Ishikawa. “We hope many people will enjoy them.”
Teshima was speaking after the auction, held at the central wholesale market of Kanazawa, capital of the prefecture.
Ruby Roman is a variety of large-sized grapes, each weighing 20 grams or more. The bright ruby fruit features a high sugar content.
JA Zen-Noh Ishikawa, a branch of the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations, started shipments of Ruby Roman in 2008.
Shipments totaled about 23,500 bunches for some ¥139 million. The local cooperative aims to ship a record 26,000 bunches this year.
