The Dragon Quest video game series produced by Square Enix Co. has reached its 30th year. The first edition of the series was developed in 1986 for the Family Computer Disk System, also known as the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Square Enix announced Wednesday that it will launch projects to celebrate the anniversary throughout this year. It plans to cooperate with Universal Studios Japan to open an attraction at the Osaka theme park, and hold concerts nationwide.

Dragon Quest is a role-playing video game series in which characters level up by defeating enemies in adventures. The appointment of manga artist Akira Toriyama and composer Kouichi Sugiyama to the series’ development team in the 1980s attracted considerable interest at the time.

The series has achieved great success, selling a total of 66 million units worldwide, including spin-offs. The third edition launched the social phenomenon of large crowds of people lining up for the chance to buy games when it went on sale in 1988.

“I didn’t imagine the series would continue for 30 years,” said Yuji Horii, the game designer who created the series, at the event held Wednesday.
