NEWS ON JAPAN

Officials with Tokyo's metropolitan government say flu season has started in the Japanese capital.

They said on Thursday that the number of people diagnosed with influenza in the week through Sunday was 1.7 per medical institution. That figure is high enough to indicate an outbreak.

The result was based on reports from 419 medical facilities in Tokyo.  Influenza is usually rampant in the city from December through March.

But this year, the start of flu season was delayed by more than a month due to higher-than-average temperatures.

This is the first time in 4 years it has started in January.
