The Japanese and U.S. governments agreed on Thursday to set a total of 10 new daytime slots for round-trips between the two countries at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.

The agreement was reached in civil aviation talks between the two countries that started Tuesday.

With the new agreement, direct daytime flights to U.S. East Coast cities, such as New York, are expected to be launched in October, Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Minister Keiichi Ishii announced.

According to Ishii, while 10 new slots are set for daytime take-offs and landings, night/early-hour slots will be reduced from the current eight to two, meaning the total number of slots between the two nations will be 12. Japanese and U.S. airlines will operate six slots each — five new daytime slots plus one night/early-hour slot.

“Japanese and U.S. airline companies will be able to deal with business and tourist demands promptly [with the agreement],” Ishii said.
