Smart Convenience Store Opens in Huis Ten Bosch Hotel

  • Category:Stay
SASEBO, Nagasaki (Jiji Press) — An unmanned smart convenience store opened Tuesday in a hotel in the Huis Ten Bosch theme park in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan.

The store, called Smart Combini, is located near the reception counter in Henn-na Hotel (Strange Hotel), a highly publicized hotel where robots take care of guests, and uses recognition technology to control entries and exits of customers and make possible cashless payments at the unmanned checkout counter.

Specifically, Smart Combini customers are required to register their faces using a tablet device with a camera installed in front of the store before entry so the store door can be unlocked only upon separate cameras recognizing their faces.

Shoppers can purchase five kinds of items for the time being, such as rice balls, bread products and noodle soups. Payments are made via credit card at the checkout counter after products are recognized by a camera at the counter, the operator said.

“We’d like to offer innovative cashless services at not only the convenience store but other parts of the hotel,” Takeyoshi Oe, general manager of the hotel, said.
