NARITA, Chiba Pref. (Jiji Press) — Suntory Flowers Ltd. showed off its new brand of blue cyclamen in Narita, Chiba Prefecture on Thursday.
The cyclamen, which has many indigo petals and is named “Edo no Ao,” was unveiled to the press by the company, a unit of major Japanese food and beverage group Suntory Holdings Ltd.
Shipments will start on Tuesday, mainly for gifts.
“It took 10 years to create the primary blue color,” said Yasuhiro Takahashi, president of Taiei Kaen, the flower farm in Narita that developed and produced the blue cyclamen.
“As the cyclamen can withstand hot weather, we’d like people to enjoy them throughout the year,” Takahashi said.
Blue cyclamens are extremely rare, accounting for only about 1 percent of the entire cyclamen shipment volume in Japan.
