▼ Honda, Toyota Unveil Concept Cars with AI in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS (Jiji Press) — Honda Motor Co. at a major trade show in Las Vegas on Thursday unveiled its NeuV concept self-driving car that can also be used as a driverless taxi and earn money.
Using artificial intelligence technology, the two-seater electric vehicle assesses the driver’s preference and stress levels based on his or her facial expressions, movements and voice, and makes recommendations depending on the situation, according to the automaker.
The NeuV can also sell electricity back to the power grid from its battery when it is not in use. NeuV is short for New Electric Urban Vehicle.
It is the first time in 10 years for Honda to showcase a product at the annual Consumer Electronics Show, one of the world’s largest trade shows for home appliances and information technology-related products.
The CES was launched in 1967. This year’s exhibition started on Thursday for a four-day run.
Honda also disclosed plans to accelerate collaboration with other firms in such fields as AI, big data and robotics.
AI ‘understands’ people
Toyota Motor Corp. on Wednesday unveiled to the media a concept vehicle with an artificial intelligence system that is billed to “understand” people.
The four-seat Concept-i learns and understands drivers’ feelings, enabling a safer and more comfortable driving experience, the automaker said the day before the annual Consumer Electronics Show opens to the public in Las Vegas.
The concept, whose design features a unified windshield and roof, is a next-generation environmentally friendly car with a power source that does not emit carbon dioxide, Toyota also said.
Using accumulated data on drivers’ expressions, movements and conversations, the AI system will anticipate their personal preferences and ways of thinking.
The system “learns with the driver to build a relationship that is meaningful and human,” the automaker said.
The system will raise conversation topics that might interest drivers and show them recommended routes to their destinations.
