▼ FamilyMart to Open 24-hour Gyms
- Category:Other
TOKYO (Jiji Press)—Major convenience store operator FamilyMart Co. said Thursday it will start a 24-hour fitness gym business, tapping into consumers’ growing health consciousness.
Over the next five years, the company aims to open a total of 300 gyms, on the second floor of FamilyMart stores and other locations. The first of them will be launched in Tokyo’s Ota Ward in mid-February next year.
The gyms, called Fit & Go, will have such equipment as treadmills and shower facilities. Dedicated staff will be deployed at the gyms.
The fitness gyms will have no staff late at night and early in the morning. To prevent this from inconveniencing users, the company will introduce smartphone apps that teach users training methods.
The number of customers at convenience stores has stalled due to intensifying competition with drug stores and other retailers.
In a similar move, FamilyMart last week announced a plan to install coin-operated laundry machines at some of its stores as it hopes to attract more customers by diversifying its services.
