Seven-Eleven Japan To Close 50 Tokyo Stores For New Year's Day To Save Labor

  • Category:Other
TOKYO -- Seven-Eleven Japan Co. announced on Dec. 11 that it will close about 50 outlets in the capital for New Year's Day as part of a work-reduction experiment.

The major convenience store chain decided on the move after receiving requests from some owners of its franchise stores who are forced to work long hours due to labor shortages. The company will examine how the temporary closings affect overall sales and may expand the experiment.

Seven-Eleven Japan is now selecting targets for the experiment from both directly managed outlets and franchise stores, mainly located in business districts where few customers are expected on New Year's Day. The hours of closure are still under consideration.

Some franchise Seven-Eleven Japan stores have been closing at midnight since November based on guidelines established by the chain's headquarters in October, and as of January the number of such stores is expected to total 75.

Some franchise owners who have difficulties securing enough workers are also asking headquarters to allow them to set regular days off.

Meanwhile, rival Lawson Inc. had also announced it will close about 100 outlets in Japan on New Year's Day, mainly in urban areas, on a trial basis.
