TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The first bonitos of the season in Japan, known as “hatsugatsuo,” caught off the country between spring and early summer, are being sold at low prices thanks to a sharp recovery in catches.

“They are fatty. This is rare for the fish caught at this time of the year,” said an official of a wholesaler at the iconic Toyosu wholesale food market in Tokyo.

The recovery in catches, which had been sluggish in recent years, is bringing the seasonal delicacy back to the dinner table.

Catches have been surging in Chiba Prefecture, east of Tokyo, and elsewhere in Japan since mid-May. The amount of bonitos unloaded in Chiba, including at the main ports of Katsuura and Choshi, totaled some 3,700 tons in the first 28 days of May, up more than fourfold from a year before.

This was because the Kuroshio warm current in the Pacific Ocean is “flowing closer to the Japanese coast” this year than in usual years, allowing fishers to operate in fishing grounds relatively close to the shore, according to the Japan Fisheries Information Service Center.

Following the increased catches, wholesale prices have dropped at the Toyosu market, with the prices of 3-kilogram bonitos from Chiba set at around ¥300-500 per kilogram in late May, about half of the year-before levels.

“Sales for use at restaurants are falling due to the fallout from the new coronavirus epidemic, but sales to mass-market retailers have been increasing drastically,” a sales official of a wholesale company said.

At supermarkets in the Tokyo metropolitan area, bonito fillets for sashimi have been sold at around ¥500, more than 30% lower than the prices a year earlier.

Closer fishing grounds have also helped keep the fish fresh.
This year’s bonitos “are extremely fresh,” a worker at a Toyosu wholesaler said.

“Many bonitos are fatty just like those caught in autumn as there are many small sardines, a food for them, in the sea near Japan [this year],” an official at a fish shop in Tokyo’s Toshima Ward said.

Schools of bonitos are expected to go up north in the sea around Japan, and bonito fishing is set to start in earnest off Miyagi Prefecture and other areas nearby.
