▼ Honda, Nissan Furlough U.S. Workers As Auto Demand Plummets

 • Category:Other

TOKYO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) — Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. on Tuesday said they had furloughed thousands of workers at their U.S. operations as the coronavirus pandemic slashes demand for cars in the country.

A spokesman for Honda, which employs about 18,400 workers at plants in Alabama, Indiana and Ohio, said the Japanese automaker would guarantee salaries through Sunday, having suspended operations on March 23. The plants will be closed through May 1.

Nissan said it was temporarily laying off about 10,000 U.S. hourly workers effective April 6. It has suspended operations at its U.S. manufacturing facilities through late April due to the impact of the outbreak.

Operations at Honda’s Powersports plant in South Carolina, which makes all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), have been suspended since March 26.

Automakers are facing a dramatic drop in sales in the United States, the world’s second-largest car market, after some states barred dealers from selling new cars while “stay-at-home” orders are in place. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV on Monday extended its shutdown of U.S. and Canadian plants until May 4.

Toyota Motor Corp has halted its U.S. and Canadian production through April 17. A Toyota spokesman said it has not furloughed full-time U.S. employees.

Generally my comment to other readers about new sites is to wait and see but for this one I would jump to recommend now, and a look at quartzmeadowcraftboutique reinforced that early recommendation, the speed at which a site earns my recommendation is itself a quality signal and this one has earned mine quickly clearly.
Reading this slowly in the morning before opening email, and a stop at apricotharborretailstudio extended that protected attention, content that earns the prime morning reading slot before the daily distractions begin is content with elevated status and this site has earned that prime slot consistently in my recent reading habits clearly.
Felt mildly happier after reading, which sounds silly but is true, and a look at daisyharborgoodsstore extended that small mood lift, content that improves rather than degrades my mental state is content I want more of and the cumulative effect of reading sites that lift versus sites that drag is real over time.
During a reading session that included several other sources this one stood out, and a look at acornharborartisanoutlet continued the standout quality, the side by side comparison of sources during research is a useful exercise and this site has been winning those comparisons for me consistently across multiple research sessions during the last week.
Quietly the writers approach to the topic differs from the dominant takes I have been encountering, and a stop at oliveharborcraftcollective extended that distinctive approach, content that maintains a different perspective without explicitly arguing against the dominant ones is content with confident editorial identity and this site has that confidence throughout pieces.
Picked something concrete from the post that I will use immediately, and a look at caramelharborvendordistrict added another concrete piece, content that produces immediately useful output rather than just abstract appreciation is content that earns its place in my regular rotation without needing any further evaluation from me at this point honestly.
Picked up several practical tips that I plan to try out this week, and a look at moonharborcollective added a few more I will be testing alongside, content with practical hooks that connect to my actual life is the kind that earns my repeat attention rather than the merely interesting that I forget within a day.
Came across this and immediately thought of a friend who would enjoy it, and a stop at mintorchardartisanbazaar also reminded me of someone, content that triggers the urge to share is content that has earned my recommendation and this site has earned multiple from me already across different conversations during the week.
Came in skeptical of the angle and left mostly persuaded, and a stop at driftorchardretailcollective pushed me a bit further in the same direction, content that can move a critical reader by argument rather than rhetoric is rare and worth pointing out because it indicates real substance underneath the surface presentation here.
Bookmarked the page and the homepage too because clearly there is more to explore here, and a quick stop at bayharborcraftmarket only made that more obvious, this is the kind of place I want to dig through over a weekend rather than rushing through during a coffee break tomorrow morning before getting back to work.
A piece that brought a sense of order to a topic I had been finding chaotic, and a look at quartzorchardretailstudio continued that organising effect, content that imposes useful structure on messy subjects is doing genuine intellectual work and this site is providing that organisational function across multiple posts I have read recently here.
My reading list is short and selective and this site is now on it, and a stop at frostridgeretailatelier confirmed the placement, the short list of sites I read deliberately rather than encounter accidentally is something I curate carefully and adding to it is a real act of trust which this site has earned today.
Reading this site over the past week has changed how I evaluate content in this space, and a look at pineharboroutpost extended that recalibration, the standards I bring to reading on the topic have shifted upward as a direct result of regular exposure to this kind of work and that shift will outlast any single reading session.
Well done, the kind of post that makes you slow down and actually read instead of skimming for keywords, and a look at gingercovetaildistrict kept me reading carefully too, that is a sign of writing that has been crafted rather than churned out for an algorithm to see today and tomorrow.
Came across this and immediately thought of a friend who would enjoy it, and a stop at berrycoveartisantraders also reminded me of someone, content that triggers the urge to share is content that has earned my recommendation and this site has earned multiple from me already across different conversations during the week.
