New Sharp Chief Vows Structural Reforms

SAKAI (Jiji Press) — Tai Jeng-wu, the new president of Sharp Corp., on Monday vowed to implement full-fledged structural reforms at the struggling electronics maker.

In talks with reporters at Sharp’s new headquarters in Sakai, Tai, also No.
2 executive of Taiwan’s Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., added he will consider properly deploying Sharp staff, rather than carrying out job cuts.
Tai took office on Aug. 13, the day after Hon Hai, also known as Foxconn Technology Group, completed procedures to acquire Sharp.

Sharp is currently cutting pay for employees in managerial posts by 5 percent and that for rank-and-file employees by 2 percent.

In a message he sent to employees, Tai stressed that he will thoroughly implement a personnel system based on the principle that good work will be rewarded and bad work punished.

The message also revealed Tai’s plan to make up for all of the pay cuts for nonmanagerial employees with allowances from September. For managerial employees, the allowances will be paid to those who achieve results, he said.

Sharp has stopped producing television sets on its own in the United States and Europe and is allowing other companies to make Sharp-brand TVs.

Tai indicated his hope for Sharp to resume TV production, saying the company wants to regain the brand.
