Japan Contributes Nearly $15 Million To NATO’s Ukraine Support Fund

  • Category:Other
Japan has contributed $14,658,000 (approximately 2.2 billion yen) to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s “Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL)” initiative, Japan’s Foreign Ministry has reported.

The contribution is designated for a package consisting exclusively of “non-lethal” equipment, a term employed by the Ministry in its official statement to preclude any allegations that Japan is financing the war in Ukraine.

Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution prohibits the resolution of international disputes by military force. The specific details regarding the so-called “non-lethal” equipment to be supplied will be determined in coordination with NATO.

Japan is also deploying four Self-Defense Force personnel to the NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine headquarters in Germany, marking the country’s first such assignment. The personnel will focus on coordination duties rather than combat.

Defense Minister KOIZUMI Shinjiro said the deployment aims to strengthen Japan’s defense capabilities by learning from the ongoing conflict and deepening cooperation with NATO.

Japan’s government says it will continue to support Ukraine to achieve a just and lasting peace and intends to further strengthen Japan-NATO cooperation.

The Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List is a framework under which NATO member states and partner countries contribute funds to procure US-manufactured equipment through NATO and provide it to Ukraine.
