▼ Managers Must Understand Importance of Quality Control Over Short-term Profit
- Category:Other
TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Japan Accreditation Board President Yoshinori Iizuka has said managers at Japanese companies need to recognize the importance of product quality control, given recent irregularities at major
manufacturers.
“Focusing on short-term profits within a narrow scope in disregard of long-term benefits is a reason” for the irregularities, including a product data falsification scandal at Kobe Steel Ltd., Iizuka said in an interview with Jiji Press on Monday.
Certifications given under the International Organization for
Standardization and Japanese Industrial Standards rules play major roles in guaranteeing product quality in Japan. Iizuka’s board assesses third-party bodies conducting screenings for ISO certifications.
“Some business managers cling to old habits, thinking that it’s all right if decent products are made in the end,” Iizuka said.
Companies can gain trust by explaining not only the results, but also all relevant processes, Iizuka said, pointing to the importance of transparency amid an increase in trade with foreign clients.
“If a company gets unsure about a rule within itself, then it should review the rule” to make sure that it is consistent with the objective of producing safe products, Iizuka said.
“Organizations that break rules at their own discretion are very dangerous” to companies and society, he added.
On the meaning of ISO and other certifications, Iizuka said certified companies can prove “in a transparent manner” that they are capable of delivering products at quality levels agreed on with customers.
Such certifications make it easier for the customer side to choose good-quality business partners efficiently, he said.
