TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Two of the four major Japanese brewers enjoyed record consolidated sales and operating profits in 2015, powered by brisk overseas performance, their latest earnings data have shown. The two are Suntory Holdings Ltd. and Asahi Group Holdings Ltd..

In contrast, Kirin Holdings Co. suffered the first net loss since the group went public in 1949, dragged down by a Brazilian subsidiary’s poor performance.

Sapporo Holdings Ltd. logged an operating profit fall due to sluggish sales of “third-segment” quasi-beer products. Suntory posted an operating profit of ¥185.09 billion, up 12.3 percent from the previous year, and a net profit of ¥45.24 billion, up 17.9 percent, on sales of ¥2.69 trillion, up 9.4 percent.

The group’s upbeat earnings were led by a U.S. unit producing the Jim Beam bourbon whiskey. Integration since the U.S. firm joined the Japanese group “has progressed smoothly,” Suntory President Takeshi Niinami said.

Asahi’s operating profit rose 5.3 percent to ¥135.12 billion, and net profit jumped 10.6 percent to ¥76.43 billion. Sales totaled ¥1.86 trillion, up 4 percent. Asahi enjoyed strong sales of soft drinks in Southeast Asian and Oceanian markets.

Kirin booked an operating profit of ¥124.75 billion, up 8.9 percent. But it incurred a net loss of ¥47.33 billion, compared with the previous year’s profit of ¥32.39 billion. Its sales edged up 0.1 percent to ¥2.2 trillion.

Although its Australian subsidiary posted earnings growth, the Brazilian unit incurred an operating loss of ¥18.5 billion, due to weak beer sales.
“In 2016, we will strengthen the foundation of our beer operations and realign unprofitable businesses,” said Kirin President Yoshinori Isozaki.
Sapporo’s operating profit slid 5.3 percent to ¥13.95 billion, while sales rose 2.9 percent to ¥533.75 billion.

Its net profit soared to ¥6.11 billion from ¥340 million in the previous year, when the firm made an additional alcohol tax payment over its Goku Zero third-segment quasi-beer product.
