TOKYO (Jiji Press) — The benchmark Nikkei average closed above 17,000 for the first time in about one month on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on Tuesday, thanks to a surge in crude oil prices and the yen’s fall against the dollar.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average gained 164.67 points, or 0.98 percent, to end at 17,024.76, its first finish above 17,000 since Sept. 7. On Friday, the key market gauge fell 39.01 points. The Tokyo market was closed on Monday for a national holiday.

The TOPIX index of all First Section issues closed up 5.74 points, or 0.42 percent, at 1,356.35, after losing 3.32 points the previous trading day.

Rising issues outnumbered falling ones 1,132 to 699 on the TSE’s first section, while 153 issues were unchanged.

Volume increased to 1,665 million shares, from Friday’s 1,512 million shares.
