▼ Tax-Free Department-Store Sales In Japan Hit Record In October
- Category:Other
Spending by foreign tourists pushed up sales of tax-free items at department stores across Japan to a record high in October.
The Japan Department Stores Association says the figure came in at just over 38.3 billion yen, or about 257 million dollars. That's the highest amount for a single month since the survey began in 2014. It was up 178.9 percent from a year earlier.
Officials say they expect duty-free sales to continue growing toward the year-end, supported by brisk inbound-tourism spending.
The association says sales of all types of items at department stores last month stood at 453.1 billion yen, or about 3 billion dollars. That's up 6.1 percent in yen terms year on year, marking a rise for the 20th straight month.
