▼ Suntory Unit Holds London Event for Japanese Craft Gin
- Category:Event
LONDON (Jiji Press) — Beam Suntory Inc., a U.S. unit of major Japanese beverage group Suntory Holdings Ltd., held an event in London on Tuesday to promote Japanese craft gin Roku, which uses ingredients unique to the Asian country.
Some 30 people attended the event, held at a restaurant, which was filled with exotic aroma from the spirit.
On top of juniper berries and seven other common gin ingredients, six Japanese materials, including sansho pepper, yuzu citrus fruit and cherry blossom petals, were added to give an original flavor to the beverage. Roku means six in Japanese.
The gin, which is made in Japan, was released in Britain in February.
A 27-year-old employee at a bar in London, one of the participants, enjoyed Roku, saying, “I like it, I like yuzu.”
The employee said, “I have never been to Japan,” but added that the taste of Roku allowed him to imagine landscape in the country.
Unlike whiskey, gin does not need a long aging period and can be shipped immediately after production.
Liquor companies are moving to boost sales of gin products at a time when they face shortages of malt whiskey amid the growing popularity of whiskey.
