The Rokkō Shidare Observatory in Kobe, Japan, is an unusual observatory. It is perched on the top of Mount Rokkō almost a thousand yards above sea level, but here, rather than to observe the surrounding landscape, visitors are meant to witness nature and its shifting states.

From a distance, the building is surprisingly unassuming, as you would expect a hilltop observatory to be more of a landmark. It almost seems to be an extension of the hill on top of which it stands. But once you enter the building, you cannot help but feel astonished by the generosity of the design.

This sensory observatory is designed by Hiroshima-based Sambuichi Architects, established in 1997 by Hiroshi Sambuichi. According to himself, Sambuichi finds his primary sources of inspiration in the intricate workings of the earth and its elements - specifically the "moving materials," such as air, wind and water.

The different states of water
The overall concept of the Rokkō Shidare Observatory revolves around water, which is the element that fascinates Sambuichi the most, because of its inherent state-shifting abilities.

Sambuichi's projects are generally very site-specific (he spends years on climatic and topological surveys), and Rokkō Shidare is no exception. The climate on Mount Rokkō, is characterized by harsh, windy winters, which results in a local phenomenon: large amounts of white rime collects like spikes on bushes and tree branches.

The distinguishing outer frame of the building that looks like a perforated dome is composed of an intricate structure of wooden sticks within hexagonal frames. The frames are designed to attract frost in winter in the same way as the surrounding vegetation does.
Depending on the time of year of your visit, the terraced reservoirs, which is the first thing you meet as you ascend towards the building, will be either empty or filled with either water or ice.
The water collected here in the summer and autumn months will freeze in the winter. The ice will then be cut into small blocks and transported into the core of the building, where it is placed in small airtight compartments under the seats of a bench. Here it will stay throughout the summer, cooling the hot air, whilst slowly melting and dripping into small pools carved in the stone floor. Finally, it will evaporate back into the atmosphere, closing the circuit.

Back to nature
In all of his projects (and this one in particular), Sambuichi has made sustainability his main focus, but with a headstrong lo-fi approach. He is one of the few contemporary architects, who sees sustainability as a precondition for architecture instead of an obstacle. At the same time, he applies a certain "Less is more"-logic that is rarely seen in this particular field of architecture, with exceptionally simple and remarkably effective results.

Most often, Sambuichi is boxed in with a new generation of Japanese architects, who have grown tired of the technologically dominated architecture of today and who seek to (re)discover the confluence between architecture and nature.

This categorization makes sense to a certain degree, but unlike many of his contemporaries (Sou Fujimoto, Junya Ishigami to name a few), Sambuichi seeks to draw inspiration - not just conceptually - but directly from nature. He sees architecture as "details of the earth", and you find this way of thinking clearly materialized in Rokkō Shidare.

The poetry of the project lies in the interrelation between the circularity in the architecture and the circularity of the natural processes you find yourself there to observe.

Worth pointing out that the writer made the topic feel more interesting than I had been expecting, and a look at curbcliff continued that elevation effect, content that improves the apparent quality of its subject through skilled treatment is doing something real and this site has clearly developed that kind of editorial alchemy throughout.
Reading this prompted me to dig out an old reference book related to the topic, and a stop at boomastro extended that connection to other sources, content that connects me back to my own existing knowledge rather than asking me to forget it is content with continuity and this site has that continuous quality.
Worth a quiet moment of recognition for the consistency I have noticed across multiple posts, and a stop at dewchip continued that consistent quality, sites that maintain quality across many pieces rather than peaking on one viral post are sites with real editorial discipline and this one has clearly developed that discipline carefully.
A genuine compliment to the writer for keeping the post focused on what mattered, and a look at bauxclay continued that disciplined focus, focus is a editorial choice that compounds across many small decisions and this site has clearly made those small decisions consistently across what I have read so far this week here.
A piece that prompted a small mental rearrangement of how I order related ideas, and a look at astrebull extended that rearranging effect, content that affects the structure of my thinking rather than just adding to it is content with the deepest kind of impact and this site is reaching that depth for me today.
A piece that built up gradually rather than front loading its main points, and a look at amidbrawn maintained the same gradual structure, content that trusts the reader to reach conclusions through accumulating reasoning is more persuasive than content that announces conclusions and then defends them and this site uses the persuasive approach.
sildenafil vs tadalafil tadalafil max dose tadalafil mechanism of action
Glad I stumbled across this post, the explanations actually make sense without needing background knowledge to follow along, and after a stop at byrdbrig the same was true there, no assumptions about the reader just clear writing that anyone can understand from the first line right through to the end.
Reading this gave me material for a conversation I needed to have anyway, and a stop at coilbyrd added even more talking points, content that connects to upcoming social or professional needs rather than just being interesting in the abstract is the kind that earns priority placement in my attention these days routinely.
Decided after reading this that I would check this site weekly going forward, and a stop at cotcloud reinforced that commitment, deciding to add a site to a regular rotation requires meeting a quality bar that very few places clear and this one cleared it cleanly without any noticeable effort or marketing push behind it.
Recommended to anyone working in or curious about this area, the depth and clarity combine well, and a look at cultbotany keeps that going across more pages, the kind of site that earns regular visits rather than chasing trends has my respect because it suggests genuine commitment to the topic itself rather than to chasing trends.
Better than the average post on this subject by some distance, and a look at chordbase reinforced that, you can tell within the first paragraph that the writer here actually cares about the topic rather than just covering it for the sake of having something to publish that week or that day.
Without overstating it this is a quietly excellent post, and a look at bauxcircle extended that quiet excellence, content that earns superlatives without demanding them through marketing language is content that has truly earned them through the substance and this site has clearly produced work in that earned excellence category today.
Generally I do not leave comments but this post merits a small note, and a stop at dewchase extended that comment worthy quality, the urge to actively contribute to a sites community rather than passively consume from it is something specific content provokes and this site has provoked that engagement urge from me today.
Started forming counter examples to test the claims and the post handled most of them implicitly, and a look at airycargo continued that anticipatory style, writers who think two steps ahead of the critical reader save themselves from a lot of follow up work and this writer has clearly internalised that habit consistently.
