Virtual Event Invite: Seaside Adventures with Ama Divers

  • Category:Experience
Seafood barbecue in Mie Prefecture, Japan

When: Saturday - Dec 11th 2021

Take a traditional tour guided by ama divers, or sea women, who come from a tradition of over 1,000 years of diving for seafood such as urchin, abalone, and scallops. Join our guides as we share the stories from the divers firsthand and then feast ourselves with freshly caught seafood barbecue.

Our tour will take place in Hachiman Kamado, an ama hut experience, located in Mie Prefecture. We will hear firsthand experiences and see the traditional clothing and goods used by ama divers - all while our fresh catch is cooking in the background.

Early ama divers were revered for retrieving seafood for lords and emperors and wore pure white in what was believed to ward off sharks.
Today the traditions are somewhat different, and most ama divers wear wetsuits, but they are still primarily made up of female divers.

Today there are only around 50 ~ 100 ama divers with each new generation so join us in this rare glimpse to participate in the live tour and ask questions through a live chat session along the way!
