Imagining wide, open spaces in Japan can be a chore, but anyone who has stepped outside of Tokyo proper will know that open space abounds. And space is good, especially when travelling with children. In Chiba Prefecture, about two hours away in Futtsu City lies a sprawling vastness of green known as Mother Bokujo. Filled with farm animals, petting zoos, amusement and adventure rides, flower viewing, eateries and handcrafts, Mother Bokujo simply blooms with fun for the family.

From September 15th to November 25th, Mother Bokujo will also be holding its annual Autumn Festival. This event features the running of the sheep, daily chances to feed the animals and even a chance for children to reenact the story of the Three Little Pigs. Adults can try their hands at catching a runaway piglet (it's actually a lot of fun), riding the barrel rodeo, riding the flying fox over the farm, and taste testing hand made sausages. Getting there

If you are not driving, then take the JR Line from Shinjuku, Tokyo or Chiba stations to Kimitsu Station. A direct shuttle bus can then take you to the farm.
