▼ Hiroshima Prefecture Governor: Nuclear Weapons A Threat To Sustainable Future
- Category:Other
The governor of Japan's atomic-bombed prefecture of Hiroshima has said nuclear weapons pose an unequivocal threat to humanity.
Yuzaki Hidehiko was speaking in a forum at United Nations headquarters in New York on Tuesday. Attendees discussed ways to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, or SDGs.
Yuzaki showed a photograph of Hiroshima City taken shortly after the US atomic bombing there on August 6, 1945, during World War Two.
The governor said Hiroshima sustained catastrophic damage 77 years ago and that many precious lives were lost.
He stressed that further use of nuclear weapons would have a devastating impact on SDGs.
Yuzaki noted that the world is exposed to nuclear threats in the wake of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, referring to Russia's suggestion of possibly using nuclear arms and its military activities at nuclear power plants in Ukraine.
He added, "We should remind ourselves again that nuclear weapons constitute an unequivocal threat to the sustainable future of humanity."
