▼ Olympics: Japan Women Get 1st Volleyball Win But Quarterfinal No Guarantee
- Category:Event
Japan's women's volleyball team wrapped up third place in its pool by beating Kenya on Saturday, but now has a nervous wait to see whether it can sneak into the quarterfinals at the Paris Olympics.
The 25-17, 25-22, 25-12 victory at South Paris Arena was Japan's first of the tournament, meaning it finished behind Brazil and Poland in Pool B with the top two teams plus the two best third-placed advancing to the quarterfinals.
"We fought together. I'm not personally satisfied with my performance, but as a team I'm glad we won 3-0," setter Koyomi Iwasaki said.
"I feel that the Olympics is a stage where not only our play but various other things are tested as well."
As well as requiring a 3-0 win over Kenya, Japan need the United States to lose in straight sets when it takes on France on Sunday, an unlikely result given France has yet to win a single set at the Olympics in defeats to Serbia and China.
Japan was firing on all cylinders against Kenya, with captain Sarina Koga scoring 16 points and Mayu Ishikawa 12.
Veronica Adhiambo Oluoch did the most damage for the East Africans, scoring 17 points.
