Osechi Sales Battle at Hand

Department stores and supermarkets are about to begin a full-scale sales war over osechi New Year’s meals, focusing on Western cuisine to attract young people who tend to shy away from traditional Japanese dishes.
Osechi with small portions for a smaller number of people also are popular, apparently due to the increasing number of senior households.

Aeon Retail Co. recently presented its osechi lineup for next year. Of its 48 sets, 18 — triple the number last year — are osechi sets containing Western foods such as French-style stew and smoked chicken.

The company will accept reservations from Oct. 1, hoping to increase the sales of all its osechi items by 10 to 15 percent compared to the previous year.

Sogo & Seibu Co. has enjoyed brisk sales of its Koshoku Osechi, whose portions are tailored for one person, since it first released the product in 2012.

The Takashimaya department store will begin accepting reservations for its Kumamoto Osechi from Wednesday, with profits going toward reconstruction assistance for those affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake.

The store is cooperating with the quake-hit Tsuruya department store in Kumamoto on an osechi set that makes generous use of foodstuffs produced in Kumamoto Prefecture and will sell for ¥16,200.
