The Tokyo high court has dismissed a case challenging rules that ban dual citizenship. It upholds a lower court ruling.

The eight plaintiffs were forced to give up their Japanese nationality after they gained citizenship in Switzerland or Liechtenstein.

They argue this violated their constitutional rights.

Roughly 75 percent of all countries allow dual citizenship.

But holding two nationalities is illegal in Japan.
