JAPAN TIMES
The Japan Sport Council on Tuesday started publicly seeking design and construction plans for a new National Stadium, which will be the main venue for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, after the previous costly design was abandoned in July.
Its total construction cost is now capped at ¥155 billion, compared to ¥252 billion projected under the previous plan. The construction needs to be completed by the end of April 2020, and 68,000 regular seats are required for the stadium.
The JSC will receive applications until November, for selection of a successful bidder by the year-end.
Design guidelines also demand that the stadium be Japanese in style and that it remain in harmony with the surrounding environment and landscape.
Plans that enable the stadium’s completion by the end of January 2020, the timing requested by the International Olympic Committee, will be given high points.
After the contractor is selected, the JSC will sign an architectural contract by January next year, with construction to start in December.
