More Heavy Snow Expected On Sea Of Japan Side

A powerful cold front brought heavy snow to a wide area mainly on the Sea of Japan side from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The snow was expected to continue intermittently on Thursday, with heavy precipitation expected in both mountain and level areas. The Meteorological Agency is urging people to be on guard against icy roads and avalanches.

According to the agency, 1.28 meters of snow fell in the 24 hours to 5 a.m. Wednesday in Minakami, Gunma Prefecture, while 1.13 meters fell in the same period to 4 a.m. Wednesday in Yuzawa, Niigata Prefecture.
More snow than usual has accumulated mainly along the mountains on the Sea of Japan side.

The amount of snow in the 24 hours through 6 a.m. Thursday is expected to reach up to 1 meter in the Hokuriku region, up to 80 centimeters in the Kanto-Koshinetsu region and up to 70 centimeters in the Tohoku and Kinki regions.

In Toyama, 19 centimeters of snow fell on Wednesday morning. Commuters were seen walking in front of JR Toyama Station, many of them with their shoulders hunched as they watched their step on the snowy ground.
