Abe, Duterte Discuss North Korea Issue

  • Category:Event
TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and visiting Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte held talks at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tokyo on Monday.

Abe and Duterte were expected to confirm their cooperation on handling provocations by North Korea and China’s increasing maritime activities, ahead of summit talks related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations that will be held in the Philippines in mid-November.

After the day’s meeting, the two leaders are due to issue a joint statement on bilateral cooperation over the next five years, including an infrastructure development project in Manila.

This is the second visit to Japan for Duterte since he took office in June last year. The first one took place in October that year.

The Philippine president is set to meet with Emperor and Empress on Tuesday.

‘Most righteous way’

MANILA (Reuters) — Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte said on Sunday he would deal with U.S. President Donald Trump “in the most righteous way” when they meet next month to discuss regional security and Manila’s war on drugs.

Trump will travel to Asia on Nov. 3-14 amid rising tensions over North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs.
