Snowboarder Ayumu Hirano took the silver medal in men’s halfpipe event Wednesday at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
The 19-year-old earned 95.25 points in his second run, but Shaun White of the United States topped that figure in his final attempt, garnering 97.75 from the judges.
Scotty James of Australia was third with 92.00.
Hirano, a native of Niigata Prefecture, began snowboarding at 4 years old and signed a contract with a U.S. snowboard maker while still a fourth-grader in elementary school.
In 2013, Hirano won his first World Cup title before grabbing the silver medal the following year in the Sochi Games at 15.
