Snowboarder Ayumu Hirano took the silver medal in men’s halfpipe event Wednesday at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Hirano, a native of Niigata Prefecture, began snowboarding at 4 years old and signed a contract with a U.S. snowboard maker while still a fourth-grader in elementary school.
