Sightseeing Center For Foreign Tourists to Open in Shinjuku Station

  • Category:Tourism
Keio Corp. and its group companies will open an information center and travel-related facilities for the rapidly increasing number of foreign tourists at an underground mall in Tokyo’s Shinjuku Station in July.

The group hopes to enhance the options available to such tourists by building a center specializing in trips to the Chubu region, where rich nature and a traditional way of life have been preserved. It will be open near the Keio Mall and Keio Mall Annex, which are adjacent to Keio New Line Shinjuku Station.

In April, the group opened Keio Nekonote Baggage Service near the site of the center. Tourists can leave their luggage there while they walk around the Shinjuku area, and the service also deliver luggage to hotels in the Nishi-Shinjuku area and to Haneda Airport.

Shinjuku Station has easy access to the Chubu region via bus services traveling the Chuo Expressway, and more than 10 local governments from the region will display their crafts, local specialties and information about travel destinations at the new center. Participating governments will include Takayama and Shirakawa in Gifu Prefecture, and those from the prefectures of Nagano and Yamanashi.

To attract more tourists, Keio said it has selected a new sightseeing route, the Three-Star Japan Alps Line, in cooperation with other companies, including a local bus operator in the region. The route will cover popular sightseeing spots in the Chubu and Hokuriku regions that can be accessed by both the expressway and local buses.

For travelers on the route, Keio will introduce a single ticket that allows access to all of the bus services. Ticket holders would also receive perks at travel-related facilities on the route.

Keio further plans to open a shopping area near the center in July aimed at foreign tourists, including a currency exchange counter and a drugstore, a type of store that is popular among foreign visitors to Japan.

A Keio public relations official said, “We hope overseas tourists will take advantage of the information center not only for sightseeing and shopping around the Shinjuku area, but also to prepare for trips to other places in Japan.”
