  • Category:Other
TOKYO (Jiji Press) — Yuta Iyama has become the first professional player of the board game of Go to hold all seven major titles of Go in Japan by winning the Judan crown.

In the fourth game on Wednesday of the 54th best-of-five Judan competition, Iyama, 26, defeated Atsushi Ida, 22, with the 163rd move, finishing with three victories and one loss.

Iyama had already owned the other six big titles — Kisei, Meijin, Honinbo, Oza, Tengen and Gosei.

“I’m glad to meet expectations for me in the past few years. I think I need to improve further,” Iyama told reporters after the end of the match held in Tokyo.

“I felt Ida’s strength in the previous match,” he also said. “I thought this time would be a tough one, but the only thing I had in my mind was to play a game without regret.”

Born in Higashiosaka, Osaka Prefecture, Iyama began to play the game of Go when he was 5 years old.

He entered the professional Go world in 2002 and won the Meijin title in 2009 at the youngest age in Japanese history.
