Coronavirus Cases Increase In Japan

The number of coronavirus cases in Japan has increased to 1,036 as of 10:30 a.m. Thursday, local time. That figure includes 706 people from the Diamond Princess cruise ship. The vessel is moored at Yokohama Port, near Tokyo.

The tally is based on data compiled by the health ministry and local governments.

Twelve people have died. That number includes six from the cruise ship.
By prefecture, Hokkaido has the most cases at 82. It is followed by Aichi with 49,Tokyo with 44, Kanagawa with 31, and Osaka with 17.

Shiga Prefecture in western Japan announced its first case on Thursday morning. The person infected is a man in his 60s.

Ten health ministry and quarantine officials have also been confirmed to be infected.

The health ministry announced that as of Wednesday 58 patients are in serious condition. Thirty-four of them are from the cruise ship. They are on respirators or are being treated in intensive care units.

A total of 229 patients had recovered and left hospitals as of Wednesday. That number includes 181 from the cruise ship.
