The body of a Japanese aid worker who was shot dead in Afghanistan has arrived in Japan.
Dr. Tetsu Nakamura died on Wednesday after being ambushed by a group of unidentified gunmen in the city of Jalalabad in the eastern province of Nangarhar.
The plane carrying his remains touched down at Narita Airport, outside Tokyo, at around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. Nakamura's widow and daughter were on board the aircraft that left the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Saturday and made a stopover in Dubai.
Airport staff lined up and bowedas the coffin was lowered from the plane.
Japanese and Afghan officials as well as Nakamura's wife and daughter offered silent prayers.
Nakamura's coffin will be transferred to his native Fukuoka Prefecture in western Japan on Monday morning.
Nakamura had spent decades in Afghanistan as a humanitarian aid worker. He also helped with rebuilding projects, including the construction of irrigation canals.
