The Neko Cup (literally “cat cup”) is a beach and sandbox sleeping cat sand sculpture toy.

The hollowed-up cup mold, available in white, black, or beige, lets you make sand sculptures of sleeping cats (“neko” is the Japanese word for cat).

 

Cute and practical, this is Japanese design at its very best and is surely one of the must-have items for the summer.

It is designed by Yuka Morii using biomass plastic materials (bamboo and scallop shell). Sand has never looked more kawaii than this.

Half the things online consist of cute cats, they say, and this was never truer than in Japan, where the lineage for loving felines stretches right back and even encompasses such literary luminaries as Natsume Soseki, often regarded as Japan’s greatest modern novelist.

 

This year, the rainy season in Japan has proved unusually long and wet, with the clouds and stormy weather continuing through the second half of July. Perhaps those trips to the beach will have to wait until August, but until then the Neko Cup also makes a great sculpture even around the house!
