Kakuryu, Kaisei Stay Perfect

  • Category:Event
Yokozuna Kakuryu and No. 6 maegashira Kaisei hit Sunday’s midway point of the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament in perfect position.

Kakuryu handled Shohozan (5-3), slapping the No. 4 maegashira down in the day’s final bout, while No. 6 maegashira Kaisei turned No. 9 maegashira Okinoumi (5-3) into roadkill as he continues to steamroll opponents in Osaka. Both improved to 8-0.

The Brazilian set the pace for Kakuryu by forcing out Okinoumi earlier in the day, and Kakuryu matched him by keeping his distance from Shohozan before eventually getting his opponent off balance and delivering a blow that sent the maegashira to the surface.

Meanwhile, ozeki Goeido posted his sixth victory by patiently working No. 3 maegashira Kotoshogiku (2-6) toward the bales and pushing him out.

Ozeki Takayasu also picked up his sixth victory. He recovered from a stumble just after the start-off to get his bearings and push out No. 3 maegashira Takakeisho (3-5).

In a showdown between sekiwake, Tochinoshin (6-2) sent Mitakeumi to his third loss with a deft throw near the bales.

No. 16 maegashira Daiamami won to improve to 7-1 and stay right behind the leaders.
