The US State Department has lowered its travel advisory for Japan by one notch, urging people to reconsider travel to Japan due to COVID-19.

The state department on Tuesday downgraded its "Japan Travel Advisory" from the highest "Do not travel" level to the Level 3 on its four-tier scale.

The move followed the latest update from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention which lowered its COVID-19 level for Japan on Monday from the highest Level 4 to Level 3. The Level 4 means "Very High" and the Level 3 "High."

The CDC warned that people should be fully vaccinated before traveling to Japan, and that unvaccinated travelers should avoid nonessential travel to Japan.

The CDC analyzes COVID-19 situations in each country based on the number of patients and other figures reported to the World Health Organization.

Last month, the state department followed the CDC's lead and raised its travel advisory for Japan to Level 4, urging all Americans not to travel to the country.
