Japan and Cambodia have agreed to ease entry restrictions imposed in response to the coronavirus pandemic, and mutually admit long-term stayers, including expatriates, as soon as early next month.

Japan's Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu met Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen in the capital Phnom Penh on Saturday.

Motegi said Japan will continue to support Cambodia's economic development by helping with the construction of the country's main road, or the "economic corridor," that links Thailand and Vietnam.

He also said Japan intends to start readmitting government-sponsored Cambodian students soon.

In a meeting with his counterpart Prak Sokhonn, they agreed to accelerate talks to also reopen their borders to short-term travelers, including people traveling on business.

Motegi said Japan intends to provide medical equipment and technical support to help Cambodia counter the spread of the coronavirus.
