Chinese Patrol Ships Enter Japanese Waters

  • Category:Other
The Japan Coast Guard says two Chinese patrol ships have entered Japan's territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea, and are repeatedly trying to approach a Japanese fishing boat.

Coast Guard officials say two of the three Chinese vessels that had been sailing just outside the territorial waters made the intrusion off Taisho Island shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday.

The officials also say the patrol ships were still in the waters as of 3 p.m., and were attempting to approach the Japanese fishing boat.

The Coast Guard has issued warnings to the two vessels to immediately leave Japan's waters.

This is the first time since August 28 that Chinese government ships have entered Japan's territorial waters off the Senkaku Islands, and the 18th time this year.

Japan controls the islands. China and Taiwan claim them. The Japanese government maintains the islands are an inherent part of Japan's territory, in terms of history and international law. It says there is no issue of sovereignty to be resolved over them.
