M5.6 Quake Rocks Central Japan

TOKYO - An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6 shook Nagano Prefecture on Sunday morning, the weather agency said.

The quake at 7:02 a.m. originated at a shallow depth of 7 kilometers in the mountainous region and registered upper 5 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in Otaki and Kiso in the prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Two people received minor injuries during the quake, while some houses lost electricity and water supply, according to officials in Otaki. Local officials also received reports of minor damage to houses and fallen rocks, while some train services were temporarily disrupted.

After initially reporting the quake as having a magnitude of 5.7, the weather agency revised its assessment to 5.6.

The focus of the quake was just 5 km from that of the magnitude-6.8 quake in 1984 which killed 29 people, according to the agency.
