The Japanese government is ending the coronavirus state of emergency on Sunday for Tokyo and eight other prefectures. Only Okinawa Prefecture will remain under the measure through July 11.

Seven of the nine prefectures, including Tokyo and Osaka, will have the state of emergency replaced with focused restrictions that begin Monday.

In the areas with focused restrictions, restaurants and pubs which meet certain conditions will be allowed to serve alcohol until 7 p.m.

In Tokyo, alcohol can be served to customers who are alone or in groups of two and who stay no longer than 90 minutes.

The government is determined to work closely with prefectures to make sure the rules are observed, as the virus has been seen to spread where food and drinks are served.

Prime Minister Suga Yoshihide exchanged views on the outbreak in Tokyo with Governor Koike Yuriko on Saturday.

They confirmed that the vaccination rollout, which is the key to curb the outbreak, should be accelerated.

Workplace vaccinations will go into full swing on Monday.
