Coronavirus infections have been on an upward trend in Japan. Cases of the Omicron variant and community transmission are also increasing in the country.

Tokyo confirmed 84 new cases of the coronavirus on Sunday, nearly double the figure reported a week earlier.

More than half of these people had received two doses of vaccine. Week-on-week increases have been recorded for 16 days in a row.

In the southern prefecture of Okinawa, 51 people were confirmed to be infected with the coronavirus on Sunday.

Okinawa Governor Tamaki Denny said Omicron infections were earlier detected among US military base personnel, and community transmission has been confirmed. He warned that Omicron is spreading faster than the Delta variant.

Tamaki called on municipal officials to consider postponing ceremonies for Coming of Age Day on January 10 and social gatherings following those events.

On the western island of Shikoku, officials in Kochi and Kagawa prefectures have reported their first Omicron cases.

Officials in Kagawa says the infection routes have not been identified and they appear to be cases of community transmission.

Nationwide, authorities confirmed 554 infections on Sunday. So far, Omicron cases have been detected in 27 prefectures.
