▼ Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Hits Southwestern Japan

An earthquake registering five-plus on Japan's seismic intensity scale of zero to seven jolted Toshima Village in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan on Thursday. The magnitude 6.1 quake struck at around 11:05 a.m., Japan time.
Japan's Meteorological Agency says the quake originated near the Tokara island chain at a depth of 14 kilometers.
A five-plus tremor was recorded on Akusekijima Island, four on Kodakarajima Island, three in Amami City and Suwanosejima Island. Tremors registering two or one were felt across the region.
Officials say there is no threat of a tsunami.
There has been a series of earthquakes around the Tokara island chain since last Saturday.
Agency officials are urging residents to remain on the alert for seismic activity over the next several days.
