Prince Mikasa Passes Away at 100

Prince Mikasa, the Emperor’s uncle, passed away on Thursday. He was 100 years old.

According to the Imperial Household Agency, Prince Mikasa died at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo at 8:34 a.m. He has been hospitalized there since May.

The prince, the youngest brother of Emperor Showa, was fifth in the line of succession to the Japanese throne.

The prince was born on Dec. 2, 1915, and served in the now defunct Imperial Japanese Army during World War II. He also worked as an historian in the postwar period. He had nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
