- Category:Gourmet
A major Japanese chocolate maker is shifting its focus towards sustainable sweets. Fuji Oil says it has started shipping products in Japan this month that are sustainably and ethically sourced.
The world's third largest industrial chocolate maker will boost its procurement of cacao beans from countries that meet the firm's sustainability standards.
They include countries trying to eliminate child labor among bean producers and raise their income.
Cacao beans are grown in places including Africa and South America.
Production of the beans there has been targeted by critics who say it involves child labor and deforestation.
Fuji Oil adds financial support when buying cacao beans from producers in the regions.
It says it hopes to completely eliminate child labor from its cacao bean procurement network by 2030 through these and other measures.
