Tochinoshin Keeps Grip on Lead

  • Category:Event
Sekiwake Tochinoshin made it look even more likely that he would earn promotion to ozeki, beating No. 4 maegashira Chiyotairyu on Tuesday, to pick up his 10th straight win at the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.

The Georgian kept sole lead of the basho by delivering a powerful shoulder blast at the jump-off, giving Chiyotairyu (4-6) little chance to recover before lifting him over the edge.

Meanwhile, the crowd was far from impressed when yokozuna Kakuryu (9-1) sidestepped at the jump-off as No. 5 maegashira Kotoshogiku (6-4) launched himself out of the ring.

The day’s final bout saw yokozuna Hakuho (9-1) face crowd-favorite komusubi Endo (3-5-2), who was making his return after withdrawing on Day 7 with an injured arm.

Hakuho was quick off the jump-off but Endo stood firm, using his agility to outmaneuver the yokozuna. Hakuho appeared flustered at moments but managed to maintain his composure and drive the komusubi out of the ring.
