Japan has introduced an import ban on 38 products from Russia as an additional measure over the country's invasion of Ukraine. It's the first time Tokyo has imposed an import ban in connection with the conflict.

The products include alcoholic beverages such as vodka, as well as lumber-related items and electric machines.

Government officials say the banned goods represent just 1.1 percent of Japan's total imports from Russia last year.

The trade ministry says the effect on domestic industries will be limited as such products can be acquired through alternative routes.

Japan's top government spokesperson says international sanctions are starting to have an impact on the Russian economy.

Chief Cabinet Secretary, Matsuno Hirokazu says "In order to stop further escalation of the conflict, and to bring about a ceasefire as soon as possible, Japan is cooperating with the international community by imposing harsh sanctions against Russia."

The government has not banned the buying of natural gas and oil from Russia which make up the bulk of imports from the country, citing energy security.
