▼ Miyahara 4th as Japan Advances in Team Figure Skating

Japan’s top figure skater Satoko Miyahara finished fourth in the women’s short program in the team competition on Sunday, helping Japan stay in fourth place overall at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.
This ensured the nation a place in the free skate stage, which features the top five teams.
Earlier in the day, Japan’s Kana Muramoto and Chris Reed were fifth with 62.15 points in the team ice dance at Gangneung Ice Arena.
The free skate for the pairs segment was also held Sunday, with Miu Suzaki and Ryuichi Kihara placing fifth with 97.67 points.
The 19-year-old Miyahara made her Olympic debut on Sunday, finishing with a score of 68.95. “I wrapped up my performance with no major mistakes. I wanted to help keep our momentum going,” Miyahara said.
Muramoto and Reed said they were satisfied with their performance.
“I think we gathered momentum for our team,” Muramoto said.
Said Reed: “There was so much cheering and support for us. I’m grateful to the spectators for that.”
However, both Suzaki and Kihara expressed disappointment.
“I’m frustrated that I made many mistakes. But I was glad our teammates welcomed us after our turn,” Suzaki said.
Added Kihara: “I wanted to contribute to Japan, so I feel upset about not being able to show how hard we’ve been practicing. We’ll redeem [ourselves] in the pairs event on Feb. 14.”
