Otani Ready to Put Skills to Test in Major Leagues

  • Category:Event
Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters two-way star Shohei Otani has decided to make the jump to Major League Baseball under the posting system once the season here is over, multiple sources said Wednesday.

The Pacific League club effectively gave its permission for Otani to move after this season during last year’s negotiations on contract renewal. “The club said it would respect my decision when I decided to go [to the big leagues],” Otani said at that time.

Otani, the team’s first pick in the 2012 amateur draft, joined the Fighters after giving up his plans to go directly to a major league organization after graduating from Hanamaki Higashi High School in Iwate Prefecture.

Since joining the Fighters, the 23-year-old has made strides as a two-way player, putting up impressive numbers as both a pitcher and batter.
